4 Business Lessons/ Office Romance Tips from Eddie Murphy’s Boomerang

I have always admired Eddie Murphy’s original content. From ‘Harlem Nights’ to ‘Coming to America’ he has always thought outside of the box when it came to cinema. His romantic comedy ‘Boomerang’ left no stone unturned. From the script to the wardrobe and directing Murphy again showed that he knew what audiences wanted to see. In the midst of a recent movie night unbeknownst to me I uncovered some business lessons and office romance tips I just had to share.

1. Office Romances Can Get Messy – Set Clear Boundaries! The longer you put off having a real conversation about what exactly your situation is i.e dating, hook – up, monogamous – the harder its going to be. Put your cards on the table and set it free. I always find re-visiting a situation after 3-6 months is enough time to gauge trends, patterns and to determine if continuing makes sense.

3. The Bottom Line is the Bottom Line – Never forget that you were hired to do a job! If you happen to fall in love during the process, fine. However, that’s not why you were hired. Put 1st things 1st, don’t let your numbers slip and make sure you are still adding value to the company. Or else have the guts to fire yourself!

4. You need a tribe. These folks might be discovered inside or outside of your company. These are people you can confide in and gain insights and fresh perspective to issues that might be bothering you.

Mentor In My Head – Mara Brock Akil

Girlfriends, The Game, Being Mary Jane, her credits are endless. Whether she’s listed as creator, executive producer, or writer Mara Brock Akil does it all. And she slayyys when she does! I knew we were kindred spirits when I noticed her company logo was eerily similar to my Andinkra tattoo of The Wisdom Knot on my wrist.

I believe we’re destined to work together. MARA, CALL ME SIS!!

In any event, I wanted to start highlighting people who I truly admire, and Mrs. Akil is one of those people. Scouring some interviews she’s done I decided to make a list of wisdom, did you catch that, that I’ve gleaned from her. She’s truly a mentor in my head~

On femininity “For me, being from a family of strong women with the strong Black woman image and “I’m not bowing down” thinking – I had to learn that the power of femininity is far greater than any masculine power. I’ve embraced my femininity, and I have let go of a lot of some of those fighter habits.”

On Media – “Any form of media is an opportunity to be a mirror and reflection of what we are experiencing more in the details of our life,”

On Death – “Death can be so many different things.  Death doesn’t have to be in the coffin.  A lot of us are alive, but we’re not living.”

It’s always nice to see women of color, and women period in powerful positions in Hollywood. Its also refreshing to see more and more husband and wife duos fruitfully working together and inspiring others to do the same.

Mara is beautiful, talented and comes across as being very down to Earth. I hope one day I’ll have a opportunity to work with her. I’m hoping, I mean that tattoo and logo situation got to mean SOMETHING, right? lol

TIP 1 – Build Your Business FAST

  • get your idea/product/service out there be it 6, 9, or 12 months – by out there we mean getting it exchanged for money

TIP 2  – Make Sure a Patent is Worth It

  •  in the case of clothing its usually not. design changes can be so small that you waste money by paying for a patent

TIP 3 – KNOCK YOURSELF OFF 1ST!

  1. Market Demand
  2. Marketing – in some cases marketing can create Market Demand
  3. Operations – can your infrastructure handle a regional order?
  4. Finance = sustainable profitable revenue growth

Taking Your Business to the Next Level 

  1. Follow a solid business plan with a Executive Summary, Marketing Plan, Operations/Management Plan and Financial Plan – *you dont need a business plan if crowd-funding or friends and family are your financial resources
  2. Marketing Plan should answer 2 questions : What Need Will I Fill? & What Is My Target Market?

  • Simple sales process
